Avast 4.8 said my system backup on my external drive had this when I did a full scan this morning. My computer has been clean for months. I ignored it, and I'm seriously hoping it's a FP. I'm using Avast 5.0 right now and hoping it comes up negative.

Actually the 5.0 scan is already reporting an infected file on C drive (not sure what it is yet) and the scan is only 3% done. The back up is on E, and the scan is far from there still.

Yeah right. It should sort itself out after this scan. I'm just hoping Avast 5 isn't crap.

Avast 5 is crap. I'm using AVG now. No virus got on the new external hard drive from a virus-free computer, like I assumed.

Not a virus, a trojan.

Are you all clean now?

Do you ever use/scan with Malwarebytes?

I'm quite sure it was a false positive. There's no reason Avast should have identified my newly created backup file as having or being a trojan, especially since the computer it is a backup of ran clean Avast scans. I scrapped Avast and have AVG running now, and it detects nothing of the sort. There were several threads on the avast forum of people having the same issue with Norton Ghost files and Windows backups, so, I'm calling false alarm.

Moto: I'm running Malwarebytes right now. Seems like a great program, thanks for the suggestion.

I did a full scan of C: and E: and nothing showed up. It's a shame Avast had to be so annoying about something so essential as a system image file.

Malwarebytes is great.

If needed, it can also be run in "safe mode".
That's very handy.

um. so one program tells you it found something, the other program tells you there's nothing and the one that tells you there'Äs something is the baddie? very, very odd. in my experience, avast found and neutralized viruses/trojans that other programs (norton) didn't even notice. In fact, admins in Germany often use it because it's good like that.

Well, if I scanned just my computer with Avast, there was nothing, but if I scanned the computer and the external hard drive containing the system image of my computer, Avast said that system image had in it, or was, a trojan. The only option is to delete the system image and rescan for a clean bill of health, or ignore that file as a trojan threat. I like Avast, but consolidating my data and making backups is hard work, and until they fix what I think is a false positive I won't use it.
